Successfully DEBONING A CHICKEN

FOOD - Everyone loves it!

Deboning a chicken is very different to portioning or cutting up a chicken. If you buy chicken at the supermarket that has already had the bones removed, it can be over twice the price as buying a full chicken and removing the bones yourself. Believe it or not, it isn't as hard as you think!

Once you've deboned your chicken, why not consider marinading it with Lizano Salsa

A good deboning knife will make a huge difference to your ability to debone your chicken. The best knife is small, very sharp and will have a curved outer edge. It will also be useful to have a cleaver or a pair of kitchen scissors.

Underneath the video showing a professional deboning a chicken, I have written very simple instructions so you can do it yourself.

Deboning a Chicken

Step 1

Putting one thumb on the thighbone and the other on the body of the chicken, both as close to the hip joint as possible. Snap the thighbone out of its socket.

Step 2

Fold back the skin at the neck of the chicken and locate the wishbone. Scrape the meat from the wishbone and remove it.

Step 3

Pushing back the skin and the flesh, locate the wing bone joints. Cut the cartilage to separate the bones from the body of the chicken.

Step 4

Using both your fingers and the knife, pull and scrape the meat from the breast of the chicken, off the bones. You should be able to scrape or pull all the meat from the rib cage without any trouble.

Step 5

You now need to free the thigh bones by cutting the cords at the hip joints.

Step 6

Using the back end of the knife again, scrape the meat away from the thigh bones and cut it off at the joint of the leg bone.
